We have suspended spay/neuter, vaccination, and microchipping services. The local vet community is saying that they are receiving a great number of call for puppy vaccines and asked us to start offering vaccines again. I feel like we shouldn't be (and that they shouldn't be) but we are now being seen as putting puppies lives at risk because parvo. I don't like having the rescue group throwing us under the bus for stopping spay/neuter, and the vet community thinking badly of us for not vaccinating. I feel like there is no win here...
Phillip Zimmerman

20 dogs, 1 cat in the shelter with vastly decreased intakes, but we’re having problems with people dumping animals in the area around the shelter (in the outdoor playyard, in boxes by the front door, etc)

We cleared our shelter. We have one cat at the shelter for medical reasons and one on BQ. All other animals are in foster or have been adopted.

Joy, I really enjoyed your video. I love video as a platform right now. Gives room to share your thought process, decision-making rationale, and share what you and don’t know at this time. Will you post the video where you break down the touchpoints?

Some shelters are having folks ask for needed pet food via their email - and ACO's can deliver food to porches/front doors

We have stopped all spay/neuter surgeries

01:01:51
Looking at a medium/longer term issue, I’m concerned about the coming recession + wave in evictions that is likely in about two-three months. This is probably going to cause a rise in owner surrenders while we are trying to push through the backlog of surgeries that we are creating by not doing spay/neuter now. I don’t think there is going to be a “back to normal” any time soon with the potential of a deep recession, and I’m trying to think of ways to prepare for this.

Not able to do this as are staffing number is too small. Working on keeping staff working in separate areas/rooms.
KSMP UC Davis
01:05:55
Bridgid, do you currently have a home-to-home program in place?
Joy Smith
01:06:13
I agree Bridgid, I am looking ahead to when we are past the critical stage and what our organization will be going forward. Where we can focus, not having as broad a mission. Perhaps defining laser focused missions where we can have the most success. My goal is to get out of this alive and our organization surviving it too.

No home to home yet but its definitely something to work on!
Wendi Piscia
01:09:57
Tank you! Have another meeting at 11 I need to "zoom" too. Great info!

01:10:07
I really think there is a way for local shelters to pair up and help each other- catching up on surgeries especially. I hope we can find a way to do this. I also hope there is a way for us to take in donations from the public more often for people that are having a hard time affording to feed their pets. I agree Brigid, I think its coming and have to think about how to move forward.

Our team (Best Friends) has been working in a few key regions of the state (LA County and Central Cal) to formalize a task force so shelters can work together to problem solve instead of us working in all of our individual areas. If you want help organizing a task force with shelters in your area, just shoot us a note at pacific@bestfriends.org and we can see how we can help!

Unfolding situation as we're on this call. Call from animal services. One of our colony cats attacked by dog. At vet now, stable, doing rads for probable leg fx. Cat is not feral. Since our colony cats are chipped I have tracked her back. Guess this would qualify as an emergency intake??
