Hi from Ventura County Animal Services!
Kate Hurley
28:49
Just FYI here are all the questions people had in general:
Kate Hurley
29:23
• Is your assistance in the form of a gift/grant or a loan?• Is a pet owner eligible for assistance just once during their pet's lifetime?• Is there a max $ amount an owner can receive?• Do you address chronic medical issues?• How do you promote your programs - do you make info available in multiple languages spoken in your communities?• Who from your staff evaluates applications?• How long do owners typically wait between the time they apply and the time they receive $ or care?• If you accept owner-surrendered animals and track reasons given, what % are surrendered for financial reasons?• Do you have follow-up with owners after $ or care is given?• Who funds the program and how (especially if you are a government shelter) – part of the operational budget, fundraising, or friends group?• What services are provided – wellness care, basic care, specialty care?• Who can participate, and what are your criteria – homeless, low income, government programs – and how do you verify?• Are your programs just

Hello from the Ramona Humane Society in San Jacinto CA
Brenda Barnette
32:13
Katie, what is the average expense?
jenni
33:54
Are these services/procedures contracted out or are they done at the shelter's onsite vet clinic?
Karen Lee
33:58
Katie, how do you determine who qualifies for this program?
Leslie Sklena DVM Woods Humane Society
35:11
Do you ask that the contracted veterinarian give a discount for these services?
Renee Gutierrez Solano County
37:20
For the agencies that already have these types of programs, can they share Policies/Procedures/contracts or any documentation supporting the programs
Julie Johnson
38:03
I second Renee
Jackie Rose
38:08
Yes, we will be happy to our materials from Ventura County.

just catching up, thanks to Dr Mills for sharing our program and answering questions. in FY 18/19 we used $22,265 to keep 220 animals out of the shelter. we received over 600 requests. our acceptance criteria is based on demonstrated need and prognosis. we had looked at using financial information as a decision maker but the reality is some people who have a good income just run into a financial challenge challenge
ajabenninghoff
41:19
How do you handle medical care for animals in foster?
Stacy Dubuc
41:24
Are working with low costs clinics, those rates seem very low!
Brenda Barnette
41:43
Don't know if Al is on but he posted the Pets In Need policy yesterday on the list serve.
Mills’s iPad
42:34
We do our own medical care for foster pets, just like those in our shelter. For any of our animals, if they need something we can’t provide, we work with our Friends group to fundraise.
Beth Brookhouser
42:45
Our county already has three small nonprofits that offer financial assistance for veterinary issues (mostly one-time surgical). They are all small, with different policies, so while it’s great it’s also a smaller impact and very confusing. How would you recommend us stepping into this without making it even more confusing?
Renee Gutierrez Solano County
48:39
Jay, when you RTO, do you charge for any of the services?
Vanessa
49:47
HI Brenda, this is Vanessa from Pets In Need, I helped to write that policy if anyone has questions!
Jay Terrado
50:12
For some yes we do charge. If they are homeless or low income, we don't charge any fees and we also give them a free license.
Renee Gutierrez Solano County
50:42
thank you
Julie Johnson
57:40
Thank you!
Staycee Dains
58:44
for those presenting, what would have done differently in setting up your programs?
Stacy Dubuc
59:59
Is there a charge for the emergency surgery?
Renee Gutierrez Solano County
01:03:03
Question for Lisa L: How did the Local Vets feel about this type of program that can be viewed as taking away from their business/profits? Were they supportive?
John Lipp
01:08:21
We do not do Income Qualifications - Alameda
Leese Johnson
01:08:38
Are organizations obtaining grant money, donations or something else to fund the needs?
Brenda Barnette
01:09:18
We don't have a medical program yet, but for free spay/neuter we allow people to self identify so we don't scare off undocumented community members. They just have to show a piece of mail with their address to show that they are LA City residents.
Jay Terrado
01:09:27
We do not examine a pet owners income.
Mills’s iPad
01:09:37
The non profit shelter we work with tries to assess need through a conversation. They don’t require documentation of need.
Mills’s iPad
01:10:13
We get donations to our fund and also solicit grant funding for our program.
Vanessa
01:10:41
Pets In Need currently is doing the HUD Income Verification as well - but yes, it's a big sink on our staff time. We've started outsourcing verification as much as possible. If clients come to us via another org, if they have their food stamps card, etc - we can expedite verification. We even accept a letter of layoff during this time.
Jackie Rose
01:12:31
We also recently got a grant from Maddie's Fund to help with COVID impacted owners.
Mary @ Maddie's Fund
